YES (Youth Equipped to Serve) is a program of FOCUS North America and is coming to our community!
What is YES?
YES provides opportunities for junior high students, high school students, college students, and families to participate in formative weekends of service that aim to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and bring participants to an awareness of Christ in themselves and others. Through this experience, we aim to identify and cultivate leadership gifts in trip participants, with the ultimate purpose being to raise up service leaders who will lead others in loving and serving our most needy neighbors in their own parishes and communities, and on future YES trips.

Saturday and Sunday, January 14-15, our beloved Hierarch His Grace, Bp. Paul visited with us. It is always a joy and blessing when he comes.
Sunday was the March For Life-Chicago in downtown Chicago. His Grace prayed with and for us all who were there. Gathering together in a peaceful way to give voice and raise awareness to the sorrowful effects of abortion and its legalization is very important. This is the mission of the March For Life-Chicago and it is a mission the Orthodox Church can support.
A photo gallery of His Grace, Bp. Paul's weekend visit and March For Life-Chicago can be found here.
Additional news about the March can be found on the following websites:
In a centuries old tradition, many Orthodox Christians celebrate New Year's Day with a slice of Vasilopita, also known as Basil's Pie, hoping to find the coin tucked inside. There are several legends regarding the start of the tradition found here and here. Many of our Greek parishioners celebrate this tradition on New Year's Day. Photos can be found here.

For the second year in a row the faithful of St. Panteleimon Orthodox Church will open their doors to those homeless and lonely of Summit to provide a warm place and a hot Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day. "This special meal will be provided free of charge. Food preparation is being done by Village Trustee and Venetian Garden Restaurant owner, Sam Dardovski," said Fr. Andrew Bartek, Rector. The meal will be served on Sunday, December 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve and clean-up.
Fr. Andrew said, "It is a great commitment to give a few hours of time doing something like this. However, Christ tells us in the Gospel of St. Matthew 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ What better gift can we give Him on the day of His birth than to feed the least among us."

On Saturday August 27, 2016, the faithful of Saint Panteleimon Church held their Second Annual Community Picnic and their first-ever Block Party.
“The purpose of the picnic is an outreach tool to the community to share the love of Jesus Christ and to welcome them to the Church,” said Priest Andrew Bartek, Rector. “Approximately 100 people from the parish, the neighborhood and near-by communities joined in the afternoon of fun, games, food and fellowship.”
With the encouragement of Summit Mayor Sergio Rodriguez, the date for the picnic — which was expanded into a block party — was moved from a Sunday to a Saturday afternoon.
“Last year’s the picnic drew about 14 community members,” said Father Andrew. “Throughout the afternoon young and old alike enjoyed free games, a Slip’N Slide, face painting and a dunking booth. Various kinds of music filled the neighborhood air with a party atmosphere. And Russian dancers from Holy Virgin Protection ROCOR Cathedral in Des Plaines performed to the delight of neighbors and guests.”
The Summit Fire Department brought out a couple of their trucks, and the children were excited to get an inside look. get a seat inside one of the trucks.
“Tours of the church also were given, while the representatives of Chicago’s Orthodox Christian Coalition for Healthy Youth passed out fliers in Spanish for our predominately Spanish-speaking neighbors,” Father Andrew added. “Already, our parishioners are excited about next year’s picnic, offering many suggestions to enhance the experience.”
